Poodle Question: My 10 week old Poodle puppy (A toy Poodle) started having trouble urinating. She started on an antibiotic and is now able to go again. Some people told me toy Poodles should be trained to go inside. I had her housebroken going outside, but people said since toy Poodles are so low to the ground it is best to house train them for inside. What is your experience and what method would you recommend. Thank you, Karen
Answer: Hi Karen,
While the people who told you this probably had good intentions, it is not true that a Poodle will develop UTI by going to the bathroom outside.
UTI is caused by bacteria in the dog's system, not by going to the bathroom outside.
There are steps that you can take to prevent UTI's (Urinary Tract Infections) from occurring with your Poodle.
The bacteria most often originates from food and water bowls. This is not the fault of the owner, as the bacteria is not visible to the human eye. It is important to wash food and water bowls with hot water and soap once per day.
Also, UTI's can be often be prevented, if a Poodle is prone to them, by offering your Poodle citrus juice 3 times per week. Orange juice is a good example. A Poodle may not like the taste right away, and in those cases, it is best to add water to the juice. It can also help to place the juice down right next to the meal.
There are other juices that you can offer, however we have found that Poodle takes best to orange juice. And remember, this does not need to be given every day, just 3 times per week.
