How to Clip a Poodle

Overview

While many dog breeds need special grooming, it is the Poodle that has the most intricate and exceptional possibilities for clips.

Whether you have a Toy, Miniature or Standard Poodle, you undoubtedly know of the various Poodle clips, such as the Puppy, Continental, Modified Continental, English Saddle, Sporting, Lamb, Kennel, Bikini and Dutch clips.  But the question that most owners want to know is:  How to groom and clip a Poodle !  This section will get you started!
    First Things First

A good clip simply is not possible without the proper equipment. No matter which clip style you wish to have for your Poodle, let's take a look at the necessary grooming equipment that you will need.

This is a curved slicker brush. This is the type of brush that should be used for the areas of short hair.

This is a pin brush with a cushioned pad. This is the type of dog brush that should be used on longer hair.

This is a non-cushioned bristle brush. This is the type that should be used for the topknot and the Poodle's mane.

This is a steel comb, with fine teeth on 1 side and medium teeth on the other. This should be used for Toy Poodles and Miniatures.

This is a comb with rounded teeth, and is used only on the Standard Poodle.

You will, of course, need clippers.  We highly recommend the Oster pet clippers.  This is a high quality clipper that stands up well with heavy grooming.  As with most clippers, the most important aspect is the various blades that you attached to the end of the pet clippers.  These will determine the length of the Poodle's coat as you glide over it.  For example, the # 15 is used for a very short clip and the  # 5 is used for the body.

Scissors will also be needed. These are pet scissors with blunt ends. These are used for puppies and to clip around the eyes of any aged Poodle, for safety reasons.

These are sharp scissors. As you can see, this is a set of Poodle scissors and is recommended. It is much easier to scissor around a Poodle when you have different lengths.  In addtion, if you obtain a set of pet scissors such as these, you will find that you will not need to buy new ones as your Poodle grows. A quality set can last a long time.

The grooming table is essential when you wish to clip your Poodle at home and you wish for your dog to have an intricate clip.  When started young, a Poodle will become comfortable on the table, the harness keeping them safe...and be trained to stay still so that you do not make a grooming mistake.

    Home VS Professional Clippings/ Grooming

If you wish to have a complicated and intricate clip for your Poodle, you may find it is best to bring your puppy or dog to a professional groomer.  However, there are a couple of things to keep in mind.  First, it will still be your job to provide other needed grooming such as baths so that your Poodle's coat can be as healthy as possible.  Second, you won't know if you are capable of clipping your Poodle at home until you try it!

Learning How to Clip Your Poodle - For Any Owner

Many breeders start puppies off by clipping their faces beginning at 3 weeks of age, this gets them used to the noise of the clippers and the feel of them on their face, it will also help to "toughen up" the skin and prevent clipper rash, which can occur if a puppy is not clipped regularly enough.  This should be continued when you have your Poodle puppy. All Poodles need to be clipped every 4-8 weeks they are not a breed that can be "let go" as their coats will mat (as loose hairs fall back into the coat, not on the ground) causing discomfort and in some cases bruising to the skin.

Poodle coats must be brushed and then combed before any clipping is done.
