AKC Poodle Conformation Explanations & Hiding Faults - Continued, Page 3
We've all read the AKC Poodle conformation standards, but let's take a look at what these actually mean, in "layman" words to better understand what a show quality AKC Poodle  looks like.

This will be helpful, especially, when having your Poodle clipped and groomed.

The Forelegs

When viewed from the front of the Poodle, the forelegs should look straight, when viewed from the side, they should stand under the body.  The elbows should be directly below the highest point of the shoulder blades, close to the sides of the body, and should not turn in or out.  Faults are short legs and legs set too far apart or too close together.

Hiding Forelegs Faults

To make short legs look longer, never expose any part of the ankles with clippers.  Clip only to the end of the foot. Scissor the leg hair short.  Then shorten the hair over the ribs and under the chest instead of leaving the coat long.  Try not to trim bracelets or puffs on short legs; doing this will make them look even shorter.

To make long, rangy legs look shorter, gradually increase the length of hair over the ribs and under the chest, instead of leaving it short.  If the legs are close together, leave slightly more hair on the outside of each leg and shorten the hair on the inside instead of scissoring as usual.

If the legs are too far apart, leave more hair on the insides and shorten the hair on the outsides instead of scissoring as usual.

The Hindquarters

To access the rear legs, the Poodle must be observed from the side.  In a side view, the back legs should be well-angulated with a definite bend at the stifle joint and again at the hock joint.  The thighs should be well developed.  The hocks must not be bent or curved and should not turn in or out.  They should be perpendicular and close to the ground.  When viewing the Poodle from the rear, the line of the leg should be straight from the hip to the foot.  Faults are cow hocks (which turn in and cause the feet to turn  out, giving a bow-legged appearance), sickle hocks or hocks which are bent or curved and not straight, short legs, legs set too close together or too par apart, and then upper thighs with poor bone and muscle.

Hiding Faults in the Hindquarters

When viewing the Poodle from the rear, the line of the leg should be straight from the hip to the foot.  When scissoring a cow-hocked dog, leave more hair on the outside of the leg where the hock turns in and less hair on the inside to make the leg look straight.  Shorten or lengthen the hair to camouflage short or long legs.
