 The French Poodle

The Poodle comes in 3 sizes: Toy, Miniature and Standard. It is the Miniature Poodle that is often also called the “French Poodle”.   The Miniature Poodle in French is: Barboncino miniatura.

Some Facts:

When following ACK standards and groomed properly, the dog gives off a “Square” appearance…in other words, think about a square box and imagine the dog fitting well into that particular shape.

This breed has dark, oval eyes which are generally black or brown and a long, straight muzzle.  Ears are long and hang close to the face.  The long hair on the ears is called “Feathering” and the actual ears themselves are called the “leathers”.

Coats, which are technically hair and not fur, can be corded or curly. It is a common misconception that Poodle are “hypo-allergenic”.  This is true to some degree, but not completely…There are people who are allergic to the dander in the hair, just as much as some are sensitive to a dog’s fur.

This dog comes in such a wonderful variety of colors including black, blue (which is a diluted black), silver, gray, cream, apricot, red, white, brown and café-au-lait (which is a coffee-like hue). See Colors

The Poodle is a very intelligent dog which makes a wonderful family pet…and is always popular in the show ring.  Whether you have a Toy, Mini or Standard, one should know that there is not such thing as a “Teacup”.  Toys are classified by height, 10 inches (25.4cm) or under at highest point  of shoulder…however average weight is 6-9 lbs. (2.72-4.08 kg).  Any Poodle much under this weight would be at risk of canine health issues.

All types are indoor dogs, although they do need daily exercise in the form of a good walk. Most dogs do love to have a cardio run at least a couple times a week and this should be done in an enclosed yard on a leash at a park.  Not providing enough exercise is one of the main reasons for behavioral problems.  Socialization is important, as is housebreaking to create a happy, family environment.   The Poodle, no matter which its size often makes a good watchdog, alerting owners to any strangers that may come near the home, although it should be noted that this is not an aggressive breed at all.

The French Poodle is classified under the AKC Non-sporting group and is recognized by the:
CKC, FCI, AKC, UKC, ANKC, NKC, KCGB, PCA, PCC, NZKC, CCR, APRI, ACR and DRA
