Brushing and Drying a Poodle
Overview

Knowing how to dry a Poodle and knowing how to brush a Poodle is one of the most important elements of grooming this breed.  If it is not done correctly, the hairs can break, frizz or curl up in a matted mess.

Whether you have a pet Poodle or a show Poodle, it is vital that proper brushing and drying be done after a bath.

The process differs depending on whether your dog is a pet or in show...So let's take a look at some of the  most important things to know!
After giving your Poodle a bath, the brushing and drying process will be combined.  One cannot happen without the other. If you allow the Poodle's hair to dry naturally it will over curl, can become frizzy and most likely will quickly become a big, matted mess.  Alternatively, if you brush a dry coat, you can distroy the Poodle's hair, as it will create terrible split ends and cause quite a bit of damage.

If you need to brush your dog between baths, always be sure to first spritz the coat with a trigger spray.  This should be a mixture of water and canine conditioner.

Now, let's look at some of the most important things to remember when you want to properly dry your Poodle (also known as fluff drying)

    Towels

Towels must be used after a bath, but only to blot.  A Poodle's coat must never be rubbed after a bath! Rubbing causes breakage and tangling.

    Using a Hair Dryer

You can't have a Poodle without having a hair dryer!  This goes for both pet and show dogs. This serves many important purposes.  It:
    • Speeds up the process
    • It allows you to lift and ventilate the hair to make it look proper
    • A high velocity dryer will make the Poodle's coat smoother
    • If allowed to air dry, it will be curly, kinky and extremely difficult to scissor

When this is done correctly, by brushing in small sections as you dry, this is called "fluff grooming" in professional canine grooming salons.  This is so important as it keeps the Poodle's coat healthy and properly prepares it for finishing. If you take the time to correctly dry your puppy or dog, you will find that you save tons of time.  Improper techniques cause  many problems such as severe matting, unhealthy coats, dull & dry coats and more.

    Spritzing

You will find that having a solution to spritz on the coat as you go along makes a world of difference.  It is vital that the coat be dried by you and not allowed to air dry.  Using a solution of water and finishing spray or conditioner will allow you to dampen sections as you go along if they are air drying.  Speed is a crucial element to proper drying.
